Startup Registration

DPIIT Startup Registration, formally known as DPIIT Recognition, is the official process by which an eligible start-up entity is recognised by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. This recognition is granted under the flagship Startup India Initiative, launched on 16 January 2016, with the overarching goal of building a robust ecosystem that nurtures entrepreneurship, drives innovation, and generates large-scale employment opportunities across India. Upon receiving DPIIT Recognition, a start-up is officially acknowledged as part of India's formal innovation ecosystem and becomes eligible for a comprehensive suite of government benefits spanning tax exemptions, regulatory relaxations, funding support, intellectual property fast-tracking, and public procurement privileges. The recognition is issued through the Startup India portal (startupindia.gov.in) and is processed entirely online, making it one of the most accessible and entrepreneur-friendly government registration processes in the country.

Typical timeline

Entity incorporation takes about 7 to 15 working days; portal registration is same day; application filing requires 1 to 2 days; the recognition certificate is issued in 2 to 3 working days; optional 80-IAC tax exemption processing can take 3 to 6 months. The total time for recognition only is 3 to 5 working days, while the total time including tax benefits is 4 to 7 months.
